THE VETERANS' PRESS: 2021 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report shows decrease in veteran suicides

Editor's note: September is Suicide Prevention Month.

VA’s latest data from 2019 shows a decrease in suicide among veterans from the year prior. The decrease, reflecting the lowest number of veteran suicides since 2007, provides hope and motivation for continued prevention efforts.

In 2019, the suicide rate for veterans was 61% greater than civilian adults.

Almost 70% of all veteran suicide deaths in 2019 resulted from self-inflicted gunshots.

Only about 3 out of 10 veterans who die by suicide have received VA health care.
