PREP FOOTBALL: Coeur d'Alene prevails in OT thriller

| September 19, 2021 1:25 AM

BOTHELL, Wash. — Wyatt Potter, in at quarterback on Coeur d’Alene’s goalline package, ran for a touchdown on the first possession in overtime, and the Vikings stopped North Creek inches short on a two-point conversion to edge the Jaguars 43-42 in a wild nonleague football game Saturday at Pop Keeney Stadium.

“Very proud of our boys for not panicking,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “We found a way to win and that is important because you are going to have tough games like these and it's good to see how our kids responded.”

Coeur d’Alene (2-1), which had an unexpected bye last week when its opponents canceled due to COVID-19 issues, trailed 28-14 in the second half before Isaiah Griffin’s kickoff return for a touchdown sparked a comeback. Brayden Bengtson’s second touchdown pass of the day, a 26-yarder to Cameren Cope, put Coeur d’Alene up 29-28.

Gunner Giulio’s second TD of the day, a 4-yard run with 50 seconds left in regulation, tied the game at 36 and forced overtime.

Bengtson also connected with Tanner Langley on a 9-yard touchdown toss in the first half.

“Winning an OT game on the road with a last-minute stop shows our team’s character,” Amos said. “We have a chance to be pretty good, but we have a lot of work to do. Right now we are our own worst enemy. We have a lot to work on.”

North Creek is 2-1.

Coeur d’Alene plays Skyview of Vancouver, Wash., next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field in Cheney.
