Courtesy photo The Thorns North Girls 09 Red soccer team won its division at the River City Challenge at Plantes Ferry Park last weekend in Spokane. On Friday the Thorns beat the Eastern Washington Surf 7-0 with Chloe Burkholder scoring 3 goals, Ava Roberts 2, and Katie Kovatch and Sierra Sheppard 1 each. Savannah Spencer had the shutout in goal. On Saturday the Thorns beat the Sandpoint Strikers 4-1. Olivia Smith had a great goal with an assist by Chloe Burkholder, Katie Kovatch had 2 and Ava Roberts finished it off with a goal assisted by Katie Kovatch. Later in the day, the Thorns lost 1-0 to Washington East Escobar on an indirect kick. Sunday in the championship game, the Thorns earned redemption with a 2-0 win over Washington East Escobar on a goal scored by Katie Kovatch and a great PK by Tayla Ruchti. Courtesy photo The Thorns 11 girls green soccer team finished second in its bracket and fourth overall at the River City Challenge last weekend at Plantes Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane. In the first game, the Thorns lost 5-1 to FC Spokane G2011, with the Thorns' lone goal coming from Riley Greene in the second half. The Thorns then beat the Spokane Scotties G11/12 3-2. Ella Linder, Riley Greene and Emilia Meyer scored the Thorns goals. The Thorns green then played their "sister" team, the Thorns yellow, in the semifinals, falling 4-1. Riley Greene scored the lone goal for the Thorns green. Pictured are players from the Thorns green and yellow teams.
