THE CHEAP SEATS with STEVE CAMERON: Seahawks' corners; another one-and-done Zag?

| September 1, 2021 1:20 AM

Hey there, we’re going to do notes and quotes midweek this time around.

First, though, some thrilling news.

My beloved Arsenal of the English Premier League have cured all their ills.

The Arse, you surely know, have lost their first three league games, failed to score a goal so far, and have been hideous on defense.

But on Tuesday, just hours before the trading deadline expired, they snatched the gifted Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna of Italy’s Serie A for just a bit over $20 million.

Tomiyasu is a hell of a player, he’ll step straight in at the right back position — where Arsenal has considered using random fans selected by lottery — and this deal no doubt will lead to a bona fide title challenge.

Or not.

Elsewhere, in minor American sports…

ITEM: Speaking of finding fans to volunteer, Pete Carroll may be phoning you anytime now.

He needs cornerbacks.

Badly.

Soon.

Pete and GM John Schneider may have put too much faith in free agent Ahkello Witherspon to man the left side — all the while hoping starter D.J. Reed can shake off an injury over at the right corner.

Here’s the tip that they’re concerned…

Seattle shipped a seventh-round draft choice to Houston for cornerback John Reid last week, then played him extensively in the final exhibition against the Chargers — and cut him three days later.

Seattle made another deal on Monday, giving up a seventh-round choice to Jacksonville for oft-injured corner Sidney Jones.

There’s a message in here, no?

Jones actually is an exciting talent, but the former U-Dub player and Jaguars’ second-round draft choice has had a miserable time staying healthy.

Still, he was deemed surplus to requirements at Jacksonville, where former Seahawk Shaquill Griffin is now the well-paid incumbent.

Carroll, who is considered an expert at coaching up defensive backs, clearly will have to produce some magic to keep his defense shored up this year.

But hey, he’s got a week and a half to put it all together.

ITEM: Mark Few isn’t shying away from trying to lure potential one-and-done players to Gonzaga.

The Zags will host Jaden Bradley, a five-star recruit who definitely has his eyes on the NBA, on an official visit Sept. 10.

Few already has three likely one-and-done freshmen on his roster — cinch lottery pick Chet Holmgren along with guards Hunter Sallis and Nolan Hickman — so he’s no doubt thinking that the roster will have to be refreshed again for the 2022-23 season.

So, it’s back to tracking five-star athletes.

Bradley, a 6-3 guard, is originally from Rochester, N.Y., but he’s headed to college from the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Gonzaga was named as one of Bradley’s five finalists.

He claims he’ll take his talents to Spokane, or one of four other power programs.

He’s named Kentucky, Alabama, Florida State and — drumroll, please – the University of Arizona.

I wonder how often the Zags and former assistant Tommy Lloyd will go head-to-head for a really gifted player.

Did you say: “Almost every day”?

Then you would be correct.

With all due respect to UCLA, Gonzaga and Arizona have been the West’s premier programs quite a while now — and brother, we know Lloyd can recruit.

Most scouting services, however, believe that in this battle, Bradley will wind up at Kentucky — the ultimate non-surprise.

On the other hand, the Zags have a handsome record of landing their target when the player names them among his finalists.

Of course, that record came with Lloyd on board.

Now their challenge is to shut Tommy out.

Know this: Top assistant Brian Michelson and the rest of the Gonzaga staff are incredibly good.

And fisherman Few rarely comes home without a catch.

What fun.
