COEUR d’ALENE — The road to the Northwest Athletic Conference playoffs is right in front of the Cardinals, even if they have hit a few bumps in the road.

Garrett Grillo scored in the 58th minute for NIC, which was unable to score the equalizer in a loss to the Warriors at Eisenwinter Field.

“We started out really composed and got into their penalty area without capitalizing on our chances,” NIC coach Ken Thompson said. “It got pretty testy and physical, and they got a goal on a play where our guys couldn’t recover fast enough on defense. We played a lot of soccer in the second half in the attacking part of the field, but just couldn’t put anything together.”

NIC (7-3-1, 3-3-1 NWAC), is tied with Blue Mountain for third in the North Region. The top three teams advance to the NWAC playoffs starting on Nov. 6.

“We’ve got five league games left,” Thompson said. “I keep telling our guys that we control our own destiny and we’re still on the playoff line.”

Walla Walla is 4-4-0, 3-4-0.

First half — 1, WWCC, Angel Medrano (Kiko Solis), 32:00. 2, WWCC, Kiko Solis (Erick Perez), 37:44. Second half — 3, NIC, Garrett Grillo (Michael De La Torre), 58:00.

Shots on goal — WWCC 3, NIC 10.

Saves — WWCC, Brendan Gribek 9; NIC, Stuart Heringer 1.
