PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeland notches first win over Timberlake since 2013

| November 19, 2021 1:15 AM

RATHDRUM — With Lakeland facing a slight deficit at halftime, its lone senior stepped up and did exactly what you’d expect an experienced player to do.

Step in and lead the way.

Senior Addisen Kiefer, a 5-foot-10 shooting guard, scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, including hitting 4 of 4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to lead the Hawks past the Timberlake Tigers 55-49 at Hawk Court on Thursday.

“Addie really led us down the stretch,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “She broke the press and really led the way. It was nice to see her step up and take charge.”

It was the first win for Lakeland over its district rival in 15 tries, dating back to Jan. 11, 2013.

Junior forward Kenna Simon had 16 points — 10 in the first half — with 15 rebounds for Lakeland.

“Kenna kind of carried us in the first half,” Seymour said. “We struggled a little to settle in and were a little too quick to get rid of the ball.”

Freshman Marissa Needs scored 14 points for Timberlake in its season opener.

“Timberlake might have lost the best two players in the state (Taryn Soumas and Brooke Jessen) to graduation, but they executed their stuff and hit some big shots,” said Seymour of Timberlake, which has won the last two state 3A championships. “We’d get a lead, and they clawed right back.”

Lakeland returns to action Nov. 30 against visiting Kellogg.

Timberlake hosts Moscow on Dec. 1.
