PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Soph McKellips propels Lake City past Lakeland

| November 17, 2021 1:25 AM

RATHDRUM — Sophomore Kursten McKellips scored a game-high 15 points as the visiting Lake City Timberwolves beat the Lakeland Hawks 57-26 in an Inland Empire League game Tuesday night in Rathdrum.

“She can be a game changer for us,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “She can make some shots around the rim. She was able to get some space and took advantage of it.”

McKellips scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half, including eight in the third quarter, for Lake City (2-0, 1-0 IEL).

“She did a good job in the post, good footwork and good awareness of the hoop,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said of the left-handed McKellips. “She sets girls up well, and finishes well.”

Sophia Zufelt added 11 points, Kamryn Pickford 10 for Lake City, which outscored Lakeland 26-8 in the third quarter to pull away.

“I think we got a little leg weary,” said Seymour, whose team was playing in its season opener. “We looked in the third quarter like a group of girls playing for the first time against another team. Lake City did a good job spreading the floor and breaking us down. We knew in the first game there would be some jitters, but there’s a lot of room for improvement, and we have the girls who are capable of making those improvements.”

Addie Kiefer scored seven points for Lakeland, which plays host to Timberlake on Thursday.

Lake City plays host to Sandpoint on Thursday.
