PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Young T-Wolves roll in opener

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Kamryn Pickford scored seven points, all in the first half, for the Lake City Timberwolves in a 45-14 season-opening win over the Moscow Bears on Saturday at Lake City High.

Sophomore Sophia Zufelt scored seven points for Lake City, which led 23-8 at halftime.

Sophomore Avery Waddington and juniors Kameron Holzer and Emberlyn Reynolds scored six points each for Lake City, which travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.

Lake City has one senior, five sophomores, two juniors and a freshman on its varsity roster.

Grace Nauman and Lola Johns each scored four points for Moscow (1-1), which won 33-30 at Kellogg on Friday night.

ST. MARIES — The host Lumberjacks, who graduated seven seniors from last year’s team, committed 40 turnovers in a loss to the Trojans in the nonleague opener for both schools.

“They pressured us pretty good in the first half,” St. Maries coach Gary Krumheuer said. “We’re so young in the backcourt with two sophomores starting. It’s going to be a learning experience.”

Sami Sindt had seven points and 10 rebounds, Stacie Mitchell 11 rebounds for St. Maries, which travels to Kendrick on Tuesday.

“We got after it on the boards pretty well,” Krumheuer said. “It’s just going to take a bit to get going.”

Isabelle Raasch scored 13 points for Troy.
