COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Kempton's double-double leads Zags in opener

SPOKANE — Melody Kempton, a senior from Post Falls High, notched the second double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds as Gonzaga rolled past Montana State 72-47 in the season opener for the Zags on Thursday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Junior Kaylynne Truong led Gonzaga with a career-high 16 points, and also had four steals. Sophomore Yvonne Ejim added a career-best 14 points, and also had eight rebounds. Junior Kayleigh Truong had 12 points.

The Zags led 37-19 at the half as Ejim led the way with 12 points and five rebounds. Senior Abby O'Connor grabbed seven rebounds for the Bulldogs and Kempton totaled seven points and six rebounds.

Gonzaga outrebounded MSU 43-27 and shot 50.9 percentage from the floor.

Darian White, a junior from Mountain View High in Meridian, led Montana State (1-1) with 15 points.

Gonzaga travels to Montana on Sunday at 1 p.m.

San Jose State 77, Eastern Washington 67: At Cheney, freshman Jaydia Martin scored 23 points for the Eagles in a loss to the Spartans in EWU's season opener at Reese Court.

Martin and Jacinta Buckley (10 points, 12 rebounds) were two of nine players making their Eagle debuts under first-year coach Joddie Gleason.

Ella Ogier led San Jose State (1-1) with 20 points.

EWU plays at Pepperdine on Sunday.
