Northwest Specialty Hospital now offering revolutionary sleep apnea procedure

POST FALLS — A revolutionary treatment for sleep apnea called Inspire is now available at Northwest Specialty Hospital. It is the only FDA-approved obstructive sleep apnea treatment that works inside your body to treat the root cause of sleep apnea with just the click of a button.

Twenty-two million Americans suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when the airway collapses during sleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to your brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body up just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throughout the night and causes poor, disruptive sleep. Many of those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea have experienced vehicular accidents, on-the-job injuries, mental health disorders, difficulty remembering, strokes, heart attacks and death when left untreated.

The Inspire system is implanted during a short, outpatient procedure that works inside the patient’s body. Mild stimulation helps open a patient’s airway during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally throughout the body. The safety and efficacy of Inspire was evaluated during a five-year trial that demonstrated patients using Inspire experience significant reductions in sleep apnea events and significant improvements in quality-of-life measures and has appeared in more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

“We are proud to offer our patients innovative treatments that are safe and effective. The Inspire device is a novel therapy for obstructive sleep apnea that can be significantly more comfortable and effective than traditional alternatives,” according to Dr. Brandy Tacia of Northwest Ear, Nose and Throat.

Tim Herbert, president and CEO of Inspire Medical Systems, Inc. stated, “Inspire represents a significant advancement in treating sleep apnea. It is clinically proven to reduce sleep apnea events, has a high level of patient satisfaction and a high therapy adherence.”
