STATE 5A, 4A SWIMMING: Lake City champs: Timberwolf girls capture first state title; Robillard repeats for Lake City boys

| November 7, 2021 12:00 AM

BOISE — With only two automatic bids per event to the state 5A meet, Lake City coach Shelly Sobek wasn’t quite sure what to expect when it came to her girls program, and their chances to win a state title at the West Valley YMCA and Boise Aquatics Center.

Sure, they had some wild cards in there.

Suddenly, it turned all aces for the Timberwolves.

Sophomore Gabby Garasky won the state title in the 100-yard freestyle, then swam the anchor leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay as Lake City edged Boise 230.5 points to 221.5 on Saturday for the program’s first state team title.

“Both were nerve-wracking,” Garasky said. “In the 100, I knew I wanted to place first and had some personal expectations of myself. In the relay, I knew my teammates were relying on me. I had a suspicion that we needed to win and needed to pull through.”

Once wild cards were determined last Monday, Sobek began to like her team’s chances.

“I had a good idea that we could contend with some good athletes coming up,” Sobek said. “This year, with the changes and only two automatic bids from our district, I wasn’t certain our kids could do it. To win a state title, we had to get some wild cards and our athletes had to step up and fight their way in. Once I knew how many wild cards we had, I knew they had a shot and things looked pretty good.”

Last year’s state swim meet was all virtual, with times from regional qualifying meets being used to determine state placing.

Not this time around.

“Last year, we didn’t get an experience like this,” Garasky said. “For my first state experience, it was the best feeling ever.”

Lake City senior Logan Robillard, who won a virtual state title in the 200 freestyle in 2020, repeated in the event Saturday, then added a title in the 500 freestyle.

“There was some good competition for sure,” said Robillard, who has committed to Division II Northern Michigan in Marquette, Mich., where he’ll swim distance events. “I just wanted to win that event (200 freestyle) and show how capable I can be.”

Boise had won the previous three girls state team titles.

“Boise always puts up a good fight,” Lake City senior Julia Pierce said. “Our coach didn’t want to tell us how close the team scoring was, but we just knew we had to go out and fight as hard as we could.”

Sophomore Riley Taylor was runner-up in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke for Lake City and was part of the 400 freestyle relay team.

“During the whole race, my arms and legs were dead tired,” Taylor said. “I just had to push through and do it for my teammates.”

Coeur d’Alene senior Mason Groth was runner-up in the 100 butterfly.

Boise won its fourth straight boys title.

4A: The Sandpoint 200 freestyle relay team of juniors Emily Ballard and Maren Davidson and freshmen Ava de Leeuw and Ryleigh Bamer won in 1 minute, 48.83 seconds, helping the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish.

Bamer was also runner-up in the 100 butterfly for the Bulldogs, who finished second to Bishop Kelly of Boise.

Lakeland senior Annika Olson, seeded first in the 100 breaststroke, was disqualified after false-starting in the finals.

“It was an unbelievable race put in by one hell of a tough kid,” Lakeland coach Rob Urbaniak said. “She competed as hard as we knew she would. At the 50 (yard mark), she was slightly behind, but rallied to touch the wall for what could have been Lakeland’s first swimming title. However, she flinched just before she set and was disqualified due to a false start. The stat sheet reflects a DQ, but that was a gutsy performance of a champion, regardless of what the result says.”

Sandpoint junior Caleb Norling (200 freestyle) and senior Hayden Leavitt (50 freestyle) were runners-up in their respective events for the Bulldogs, who finished fourth.

Bishop Kelly also won the boys team title.
