Kispert earns first team Academic All-America honors

AUSTIN, Texas – Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert was named the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year for Division I men's basketball.

Kispert is the seventh Zag to earn Academic All-American first team honors, and the first since Nigel Williams-Goss in 2017. Kispert was selected as the 2021 DI-AAA ADA Men's Scholar postgraduate recipient, and was named to the Division I-AAA ADA Men's Scholar Athlete Team.

A native of Edmonds, Wash., Kispert is pursuing a graduate degree in business administration. Kispert, who helped lead the Zags to the NCAA national championship game, carries a 3.79 GPA in his graduate course work after earning a 3.49 as an undergrad.

Kispert was named the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year, averaging 18.6 points a game and 5.0 rebounds. He was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year and was a consensus first team All-American.

Other members of the Academic All-America first team are Max Abmas of Oral Roberts, Ian DuBose of Wake Forest, Matt Pile of Nebraska-Omaha and Franz Wagner of Michigan.

Whitworth releases 2021 football schedule

SPOKANE — Whitworth University has finalized its 2021 football schedule — a 10-game schedule, with six home games.

The Bucs will face two opponents for the first time in school history, including the first opponent from the Eastern time zone. Whitworth will also face a rematch of a first round playoff game from 2018.

Whitworth will open at home against Carnegie Mellon from Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 3. The Tartans compete in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in football, but are primarily members of the prestigious University Athletic Association.

Founded in 1919, Lincoln University of Oakland, Calif., is launching an athletics program this fall, competing in football, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball. The Bucs will host Lincoln on Sept. 11.

The following weekend Whitworth will travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a rematch of the 2018 NCAA Division III first round playoff game that the Pirates won 48-6.

Northwest Conference action kicks off on Oct. 2 against Lewis & Clark, followed by a game at Linfield on Oct. 9. Whitworth hosts Pacific Lutheran on Oct. 16 for homecoming.

Willamette visits the Pirates on Oct. 23 and Whitworth travels to Puget Sound on Oct. 30. Senior Day is scheduled for Nov. 6 when Whitworth hosts Pacific of Forest Grove, Ore. The Pirates conclude the regular season at George Fox in Newberg, Ore., on Nov. 13.
