ALBRIGHT: A shining light

| May 21, 2021 1:00 AM

Thank you for bringing Syd Albright into our home with his truly well-written articles on the history of all of us, and all the things civilization has done (and sometimes undone!) in the Sunday edition.

The recent “The Old West Cowboys” article was a perfect example of the nice blend of photos and graphics and an engaging story he seems to use to advantage. His writing is enjoyable and accessible and he seems to bring history alive with that combination.

Over the years, my wife and I have really come to enjoy Syd’s topics and the treatment he gives them. Many times I have sought out a book on one of his interesting topics, and read further details on something I’d perhaps never have heard of were it not for one of these articles.

I came to realize my full appreciation of his Sunday articles when I found myself reading this week’s on a Tuesday night because I was too busy when it came out. In taking the time to pull his section out and put it on my nightstand against the chance it might get misplaced or wind up in the canary cage, I realized how much I enjoy reading him when I’ve got time to relax.

If he’s interested, I would love to see Syd’s life story in an article if there is such a thing as a personal historical narrative allowed. I’m an avid reader of history books, and many decades of this passion have taught me that people like Syd who write about interesting things often have an interesting life story themselves. Seems to go with the territory.

At any rate, a tip of the hat to a great writer, a real asset to our paper and a gem of this great community.
