Watch out for call about account charge

| May 18, 2021 1:00 AM

A woman recently called The Press and said she recently received a phone call from an unknown number, so she didn’t answer. Someone left a message telling her there was a $979 charge to her Amazon account. If the charge wasn’t hers, the caller said, she needed to call back and cancel the item would be shipped.

The woman called back and a person claiming to work for Amazon said he needed her to go to her computer and call up her Amazon account and he would walk her through the process.

After some thought, she decided it sounded fishy and refused to do as requested.

“I didn’t give them anything,” she said.

But she came close, she said, and wants to let others know not to fall for the scam.

“It’s frightening,” she said.

The Federal Trade Commission said scammers are trying to get passwords and credit card information.

“If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up,” it states on its website under consume information.

“If you think there may actually be a problem with one of your accounts, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real,” it said.
