PREP BASEBALL: Lake City ousts league champ Post Falls, advances to state play-in game

| May 14, 2021 1:00 AM

POST FALLS — The top two seeds are not going to state.

The third-seeded team won the regional title.

And the fourth-seeded team in the four-team tourney is one win away from state.

Ah, just another 5A Region 1 baseball tournament.

Freshman Nate Weatherhead and junior Dylan Hess kept top-seeded Post Falls in check on the mound, and the Lake City Timberwolves advanced to a state play-in game with a 13-2 victory over the Trojans on Thursday in a second-place, loser-out game at Post Falls High.

“Extremely proud of the kids — a pretty resilient group of boys,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “Really proud of Nate Weatherhead, for the innings he gave us, and Dylan Hess too. Offensively, we had some really good approaches at the plate.”

Lake City (6-15) will play Kuna on Saturday at noon in Lewiston, with the winner advancing to state next week in Caldwell.

Post Falls, coming off its first league baseball title in school history, finishes 19-7-1.

In the fifth, Cole Pettit, pinch hitting for Ethan Taylor, singled up the middle to score Camdyn Martindale and trigger a three-run inning that boosted Lake City’s lead to 6-2.

In the sixth Taylor, who had re-entered, doubled down the left field line to score two.

Weatherhead struck out three and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings. Hess pitched three shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

“I’m excited for the boys; we’re peaking at the right time,” Manzardo said.
