REGIONAL/DISTRICT GOLF: Cd'A sweeps 5A regional team titles

HAYDEN LAKE — Normally, a triple bogey on the first hole would derail a round after it had barely started.

But Post Falls High senior Dominic Mosby shrugged off the rough start, and finished with a 2-over-par 74 to claim boys medalist honors at the 5A Region 1 golf tournament Monday at Avondale Golf Club.

“It means a lot, because I’ve never shot this well in a tournament like this before, where it counts, and never won a big tournament, so this feels really good,” said Mosby, who qualified for state as a freshman when the Post Falls team advanced. “Feels good to go to state my senior year; good way to close it out.”

Coeur d’Alene’s boys and girls won regional titles, and Post Falls’ boys and Lake City’s girls also qualified for state next Monday and Tuesday — also at Avondale — by finishing second.

Junior Paige Crabb, Coeur d’Alene’s No. 5 golfer, captured girls medalist honors by one shot with a 93

“Pretty excited, I’ve been working pretty hard, and it paid off,” said Crabb, who qualified for state for the first time. “This is our home course, and I play a lot over the summer. I’ve been playing well; I’m happy with my score, but I still have a lot of places I can improve. I was hitting straight and played safe.”

Cole Jaworski shot 76 and finished second overall for Coeur d’Alene’s boys, who last won the regional title in 2018.

Coeur d’Alene’s girls won their first regional title since 2015. Lake City’s girls had won the last three regional titles (2017-19), before COVID-19 wiped out spring sports championships last year.

Mosby hit right on the par-4 first hole. Trying to play a high cut around the trees for his approach, he instead hit too low, the ball clipped a branch and dropped into the water in front of the green.

His fourth shot cleared the water, but landed in the trap short of the green. He blasted out and two-putted for a 7.

“After the triple, I knew I had a lot of golf left,” Mosby said. “And as soon as the birdies started rolling in, I thought, we can roll with this. I knew that nothing really low was going to win the tournament, so I knew if I could get back to a couple over, maybe one over, that would probably do it.”

He took a one-shot lead when he birdied the par-4 16 while Jaworski parred.

On 18, he rolled in a 25-foot birdie to clinch it, making Jaworski’s shorter birdie putt moot.

“Dom can persevere through a lot of things,” Post Falls coach Jess Wingett said. ”We’ve worked on game management over the past two weeks, because we had a tournament here previously that he didn’t finish the best in, so we worked on game management and how to play this course a little more effectively. As you see, it paid off.”

“I played it in the Kraus Invitational (at Avondale) a couple weeks ago and did terrible,” Mosby said. “Shoved my ego down a notch. Shouldn’t take driver just because you can. Hit the easy shot and you’ll be fine.”

Crabb finished one shot ahead of JoJo Dodge, Lake City’s No. 1 golfer.

“She’s mentally tough, and I think that’s what you need to be on this golf course … any golf course,” Coeur d’Alene coach Chase Bennett said of Crabb. “Super proud of her, and excited for our girls.

“We don’t weigh a lot on where you play in the lineup … it doesn’t really matter where you’re at, we need you all to play well that day.”
