NIC SOFTBALL: Cardinals split with Columbia Basin

COEUR d’ALENE — Taryn Vanderwiel hit a two-run homer in a six-run fifth inning as North Idaho College beat Columbia Basin College 13-5 in the first game of a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday at Memorial Field.

CBC (6-8, 6-8 NWAC) won the nightcap 16-11.

Maddie Hull had three hits and drove in a run in the opener for NIC (18-5, 17-3).

Rylee Desautel hit a three-run homer and McKenzie Lowry hit a two-run shot for CBC. Mary Comack, a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, had a base hit.

Vanderwiel hit a grand slam in the seventh inning of the second game for the Cardinals, capping a four-hit game.

NIC plays a doubleheader at Walla Walla Community College on Tuesday.
