PREP ROUNDUP: Post Falls captures league title in baseball for first time in school history

| May 5, 2021 1:20 AM

BASEBALL

LEWISTON — With history — and the top seed to regionals — on the line, Post Falls turned to CD Sharples, and the junior delivered a masterpiece when the Trojans needed it most.

After Post Falls lost the opener 14-10, Sharples pitched a one-hit shutout as the Trojans triumphed 4-0 on Tuesday at Church Field to win the Inland Empire League championship for the Trojans’ first league title in school history.

“It means everything,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “Like I told the kids, ‘You’re setting your legacy. And you can continue it next week.”

Sharples struck out nine, walked four, and and pitched 5 1/3 no-hit innings for Post Falls (18-5-1, 15-3 IEL). He got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth by inducing a popup into shallow left field, followed by a lineout to center.

“Sharples was money. He bailed us out,” Zeller said. “His last outing, he struggled a little bit. Today he was just sharp, getting ahead of batters, making them swing at his pitches. He bailed us out.”

Lewiston (13-9, 13-5) could have tied Post Falls for the league title with a sweep — and would have earned the top seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament by taking three of four from the Trojans.

Post Falls trekked to Lewiston needing only a split for the league title — then saw its margin for error evaporate after a sloppy first game.

Cole Rutherford doubled in a run and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning of the second game for Post Falls, and finished with three RBIs.

“I told them, ‘You guys have been resilient all year,’” Zeller said. “Even in the first game, down 8-2, ace doesn’t get out of the first, and you come back.' … They’re confident, resilient, and the don’t get rattled.”

In the opener, Lewiston scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an 8-2 lead.

Post Falls battled back to take the lead in the fourth and it was still tied at 10 in the top of the sixth, before the Bengals responded with four runs in the bottom half, with Zachary Lombard’s RBI double putting the hosts ahead for good.

Kaden Cripps drove in five runs for Post Falls, including two-run singles in the second and fourth innings. Ethan Miller’s two-run double put the Trojans up 9-8 in the fourth. Zach Clark’s sacrifice fly in the sixth tied it at 10.

Post Falls walked nine, hit one and committed five errors in the opener.

“After that first loss, kids didn’t seem down, but you could tell, there was a little more sense of urgency,” Zeller said.

The 5A Region 1 tournament begins Monday, with No. 1 Post Falls at home vs. No. 4 Lake City, and No. 2 Lewiston at home vs. No. 3 Coeur d’Alene.
