COEUR d’ALENE — Love Lives Here Coeur d’Alene celebrated Global Love Day on Saturday by bringing kindness to the forefront.

Annually celebrated on May 1, countries around the world celebrate Global Love Day to remind humanity that anything can be achieved with unconditional love, which approaches situations with forgiveness and understanding.

A local movement, Love Lives Here CDA is known for its kindness declaration. It seeks to make small actions that contribute to a loving community vision and bring awareness to how loving North Idaho truly is.

The initial Choose Love over Fear Day was based on a proclamation signed by then-Mayor Sandi Bloem in 2013 to happen on Global Love Day. It was led by volunteers and North Idaho College students. They gave out free hugs in downtown Coeur d’Alene. This event was a huge community success, reminding citizens that love is at the core of North Idaho.

The year’s event theme, "Choose Love Over Fear,” brought three dozen community volunteers to the Human Rights Education Institute for a Kindness Campaign signup drive and flower bouquet handout — 450 flowers were passed out by volunteers ages 6 to 75 along Northwest Boulevard, throughout Coeur d'Alene City Park and other areas of the community. Each flower stem had an uplifting message on it such as, “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted."

Volunteers brought homemade signs bearing positive messages and stood by the street, spreading love as drivers waved and honked their horns with joyous approval.

Love Lives Here Coeur d’Alene encourages all citizens to show small acts of kindness around town. This could be simple, like making sure to say “Thank you” or opening doors for people.

More than 200 businesses and more than 20 individuals and families in the Coeur d’Alene community signed up for the Love Lives Here CDA Kindness campaign. Look for "Love Lives Here CDA" businesses to share loving messages on reader boards or social media.

Love Lives Here invites everyone to share these same types of images and messages on social media with family, friends and neighbors.
