NIC ROUNDUP: Vanderwiel powers Cardinals to softball sweep

SOFTBALL

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Taryn Vanderwiel, a freshman from Kuna High, homered in both games, and North Idaho College routed Wenatchee Valley College 15-3 and 20-4 in Northwest Athletic Conference softball Sunday at North Rotary Park.

Kasey Davis hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the first game for NIC (14-3, 13-1 NWAC), and finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Vanderwiel hit a solo homer in the third inning, Grace Shimatsu hit a three-run double in a seven-run fourth, and Madelyn Hull finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs.

In the second game, Vanderwiel hit a three-run homer in the second inning, and finished 3 for 5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Hull went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Wenatchee Valley dipped to 4-12, 4-12.

NIC travels to Pasco, Wash., on Thursday for an NWAC doubleheader vs. Columbia Basin.

Swan, NIC men in lead at Circling Raven

WORLEY — James Swan of North Idaho College, a freshman from Victoria, British Columbia, shot a 3-under par 69 on Sunday and leads by three shots after the first day of the North Idaho College Spring Invitational at Circling Raven Golf Club.

NIC’s men lead Community College of Spokane by three strokes after the first round.

In the women’s tourney, NIC is in third place after the first day, 11 shots behind first-place CC Spokane. Emily Elliott of NIC is in fourth place after shooting 84.

The tourney concludes today.
