ELECTION: Pay attention, voters

| May 2, 2021 1:00 AM

Thank you, Coeur d’Alene Press, for your recent and important coverage of the Community Library District Trustee election. This article was a bright, shiny light on recent disturbing trends in our community.

I am a third generation Coeur d’Alene native and have never been so worried about my hometown. The takeover by the extreme tactics of the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee has affected other community boards. Look at North Idaho College. Consider our own Panhandle Health District. The Coeur d’Alene School District board has experienced some of this disturbing trend, and it will only increase if level-headed citizens are apathetic.

The KCRCC has stuck its nose in the upcoming library board election, as well as the Kootenai Hospital District’s board election. Community boards are intended to represent the diverse needs and interests of its citizens. Board members are tasked with the many challenges of finding compromise and building consensus and should never be heavily influenced by any political party.

Unfortunately, the KCRCC has gotten itself immensely involved, “vetting” (“Do you share our beliefs and values?”) and endorsing those candidates who follow their lead.

Please, citizens of this great city, pay attention!
