ADDIS: Let bill be heard

| March 31, 2021 1:00 AM

Kootenai County residents finding exorbitant property tax increases should have an in-depth conversation with Representative Addis of Kootenai County, who is vice chair of the Revenue and Taxation Committee at the Legislature.

His committee is sitting on a bill to index the homeowner’s exemption that would rebalance the property tax burden and will not let the Legislature hear the bill. Due to a $100,000 cap on the homeowner’s exemption placed in 2016, the increasing values of homes are shifting the property tax burden from Commercial and Agriculture to your homes.

Your property tax this year will be established on a 32% increase, which Addis could easily relieve by letting that bill be heard. This is not a case of the taxing districts raising your taxes. This is the direct result of your legislators favoring the industries that support their seats and ignoring the people they are actually supposed to represent. Spend your $1,000 on your family, not on commercial and industry.

Editor's note: Rep. Addis is a member of but not vice chair of the Revenue and Taxation Committee. He does not possess the ability to have a bill heard or not heard.
