SANDPOINT — Liam Paddack hit a two-run triple to spark a six-run third inning as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 7-4 in an Inland Empire League game at Memorial Field on Thursday afternoon.

“We put the ball in play, and that was the key,” said Coeur d'Alene coach Erik Karns, whose team scored again in the fifth inning on a throwing error. “That’s a tough kid (Sandpoint pitcher Avery Bocksch) and he throws a lot of off-speed. We were stymied for a few innings, and that was huge. I’m not satisfied with the rest of that game because we need to be able to extend that lead. That’s what we need to build on and improve.”

Kyle Bridge went 2 for 3 with a run scored and John Gwaltney struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings of relief for Coeur d’Alene (5-3, 5-3 IEL). Jayden Rowley allowed four hits in 2 1/3 innings in the start for Coeur d’Alene.

“John’s been a horse for us this year,” Karns said. “This was our fifth game in the last five or six days, so we’ve asked a lot of our pitching staff. Even for Jayden to do what he did after throwing against Lake City on Tuesday was huge. For us to get through this week with four wins and one loss, it’s on our pitching staff.”

It was Coeur d'Alene's first visit to Sandpoint since its upgrade to artificial turf at Memorial Field.

“It’s awesome,” Karns said. “What a beautiful facility. It’s really a community jewel up there for those guys. It was a lot of fun to play on and I really wish we had something like that to play on here.”

Coeur d’Alene returns to action April 10 at Lakeland.

Max Thielbahr went 3 for 4 with three runs scored for Sandpoint (2-1, 2-1), which plays a doubleheader on Saturday at Moscow.
