COEUR d’ALENE — Phoebe Schultze of Lake City was dominant in the first game, striking out 17 in a two-hit shutout as the Timberwolves beat Coeur d’Alene 3-0 at Coeur d’Alene High’s Larry Schwenke Field.

Then things got nuts.

Coeur d’Alene came back to win 8-6 in the second game, which was called early due to darkness.

Lake City scored four times in the top of the seventh to take a 10-8 lead, and when the half-inning ended, the umpires called the game because of darkness.

Because of that, the score reverted to the last completed inning, so Coeur d’Alene won.

“It just got long and cold,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said of the day, “and the sun was going down … I’ll take the win, basically. The girls will take the win, but we need to come out and play like we can.”

“In the second game, we learned a lot about the team we have, and I could not be more proud of my staff, players, and everyone involved with the team,” said Lake City coach Jesse Lenz, who was ejected earlier in the second game. “The girls battled back to take the lead in the seventh, and that showed me a lot about the competitors we have. It was a great learning experience, and we will continue to get better as we progress throughout the season.”

Skylar Burke and Sophia Farrar each had a pair of doubles in the second game for Coeur d’Alene (3-4, 3-4 Inland Empire League), and Kaydence Constable had a pair of singles.

“We hit so much better in the second game,” Darretta said.

In the opener, the lefty Schulze walked four and allowed only singles in the fourth and fifth innings for Lake City (2-3, 2-3).

Hannah Begalman drove in a pair of runs for the T-Wolves, including an RBI single in the sixth. Hanah Stoddard also singled in a run in the sixth.

“Phoebe absolutely commanded the strike zone and threw a beautiful game in the first game,” Lenz said. “We had some timely hitting, and played solid defense behind Phoebe.”

Coeur d’Alene plays in the WTP tournament Friday and Saturday in the Boise area.

Lake City returns to action April 6 at home vs. Post Falls in a doubleheader.

The Tigers parlayed five hits, four walks, two errors and a hit batter into their big seventh inning.

COEUR d’ALENE — Alex Karns delivered a one-out, two-run pinch-hit single in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Coeur d’Alene the lead for good in a win over visiting Lake City in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Ted Page Field.

“Both Liam and John threw really well in the first game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “I thought Camdyn pitched really well for Lake City and did a good job of keeping us off balance for five innings. We just found a way to win. Our pitchers threw really well today.”

In the second game, Kyle Bridge went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Coeur d’Alene.

“We swang the bats really well in the second game,” said Erik Karns, whose team finished with 13 hits. “We’ve got a ways to go with getting hits with runners in scoring position.”
