PREP ROUNDUP: Both Coeur d'Alene softball coaches tossed in wild doubleheader

LEWISTON — The record books will show that the Coeur d’Alene Vikings were swept by the Lewiston Bengals in Inland Empire League softball Saturday at Airport Park.

But despite the 7-3, and 8-7 losses, Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said she couldn’t have been more proud of her team.

Darretta and Viking assistant coach Mike Dorame were kicked out in the fourth inning of the first game, and had to watch the rest of the doubleheader from afar. With no coaches remaining, the players basically coached themselves for the final 10-plus innings of play against a team that had swept Lake City earlier in the week.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled how hard they worked, and how unified they became,” Darretta said. “It could have gone way downhill after that.”

In the top of the fourth inning in the opener, Coeur d’Alene (2-3, 2-3 IEL) trailed 4-2, but had just scored twice and had runners at second and third with two out. On a pickoff throw from the Lewiston catcher, Skylar Burke dove back into third base and was tagged, but was called out for coming off the bag while the tag was still being applied, Darretta said she was told.

Darretta argued the call and asked for help. The home-plate umpire confirmed the call, and Darretta argued some more walking off the field, and was ejected. Moments later, Dorame was ejected, even though Darretta said Dorame hadn’t said a word.

With no other coaches on the trip, the players took over calling pitches and plays, with players taking over as base coaches — until it was their turn to hit.

“I was so proud of them; they did so well,” Darretta said. “Honestly, I think they gained a lot of confidence, and learned a lot about the game.”

Madie Cleave and Alexis Blankenship had RBI singles in the fourth inning of the first game, and Sophia Farrar’s RBI single in the sixth pulled Coeur d’Alene within 5-3.

In the second game, McCurdy hit an RBI double in the third, and Kate Boyer added an RBI single. Burke and Bekah West had RBI singles in the fourth as the Vikings took a 5-4 lead.

Lewiston is 6-0, 4-0.

Lewiston 4-7

LEWISTON — Andrew Averett opened the floodgates with a two-run double in the fifth inning of the first game for the Vikings, who split with the Bengals in an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Walker Field.

“We’d been working on our two strike approaches all spring,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns, whose team scored eight runs with two outs in the fifth. “We struggled to get on base early on, but were able to get into their bullpen and do some damage offensively.”

Cooper Larson had two RBIs in the first game for Coeur d’Alene.

Lewiston won the second game 7-4, limiting Coeur d’Alene to four hits.

“We had our chances,” Karns said. “We’d get runners on first and second, and second and third, but struggled to get the key hit. Once we figure that out, we’ll be a more consistent team.”
