POST FALLS — Junior Tyson Rutherford pitched a five-inning perfect game as the Post Falls Trojans blanked the Lakeland Hawks 22-0 in an Inland Empire League game on Thursday.

Rutherford struck out 11 of the 15 batters he faced for Post Falls (4-1, 3-1 IEL).

“First one I’ve ever been a part of in my 33 years of coaching — on either side,” said Post Falls coach Mick Zeller, who had been victim of a no-hitter once, but had never had one of his pitchers throw a no-no or a perfecto.

Only one ball left the infield vs. Rutherford, that one a looper to short right field and was knocked down slightly by the wind, but Aidan Winters came on to make the catch between his shoelaces and his knees.

“Lakeland’s young, but he was able to get ahead in the count, and once you get ahead 0-1, you can throw whatever you want,” Zeller said. “His fastball was overpowering, and you throw in that curveball a couple of times, it just buckles kids’ knees.”

Kaden Cripps had two hits and drove in five runs for Post Falls. Cole Rutherford, Tyson’s senior brother, went 3 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored. Tyson Rutherford went 2 for 4 with an RBI single. Timmy Bastedo had a two-run double in a 15-run fourth inning for the Trojans, and Nick Chase had a two-run single in the frame and scored three runs.

In the nonleague second game, Jerad Taylor had two hits, including a three-run homer, for Post Falls. Spencer Zeller went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored, and Chase had a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Nick Nowell had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for Lakeland (0-3, 0-2).

Post Falls travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

Lakeland returns to action next week with four games in three days in the Boise area, starting next Thursday with games vs. Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls and Jerome at Rodeo Park in Nampa.

Trojans sweep in

Battle for the Baton

COEUR d’ALENE — Just one year ago, this casual season-opening dual with Lake City turned out to be the end as well for the Post Falls track and field team.

“Last year, it was pretty dang cold,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “We were primed to have a pretty good year.”

Then, the coronavirus pandemic had other ideas, wiping out the entire spring schedule days later.

Thursday, Post Falls and Lake City returned to the track, where the Trojans swept the Timberwolves in the Battle for the Baton dual at Lake City High.

“Overall, I was really pleased with our kids,” Quesnell said. “The weather was awesome and it was a big plus to get a meet in.”

“To have a meet and weather like this was really strange up here,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “It was just fun to be back out at the track. It seems like it’s been a year, but it’s been a long time.”

Brycen Kempton had wins in the 1,600 and 3,200, Isaac Ballew swept in the hurdles for Post Falls, which beat Lake City 95-54. Logan Parson won the discus and shot put for Lake City boys.

Samantha Wood had wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Trojan girls, who edged the Timberwolves 71-67. Angelyca Chapman won the 200 and 800 and Madeline Wolford won the shot put and discus for Lake City.

Next Wednesday, Lake City hosts Sandpoint and Post Falls hosts Moscow.

SANDPOINT — Senior leadoff batter Emma Howard hit her fourth home run of the young season, and finished 2 for 2 with a double, four RBIs and four runs scored as the Tigers (3-2) beat the Bulldogs (0-3) in nonleague play on the new artificial turf at War Memorial Field.

“Emma Howard’s just hitting the ball really well,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “In the past she’s always been a small-ball player, fast — we just try to get her on and move her around. As your leadoff it’s nice to score some runs right away. And she’s doing awesome in the outfield — she made some really good catches for us. Super excited about that.”

Freshman Acacia Pecor struck out eight for Timberlake, which travels to St. Maries on Tuesday.
