COEUR d’ALENE — Without the benefit of some of those nonleague games against Washington schools — which are just starting with traditional fall sports after a COVID-19 delay — teams are still trying to figure things out on the fly.

On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene senior pitcher Jayden Rowley showed his coaches something.

Rowley allowed two hits over three innings, striking out two for the Vikings in 13-0 Inland Empire League win over the Lakeland Hawks at Ted Page Field.

“It was his first varsity game and Jayden gave us a really good start,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “He did a good job of pumping strikes and the guys played really good defense behind him. He was calm and had a great presence on the mound and put us in a great position to win.”

Andrew Karns had two-run doubles in the second and third inning and Cooper Larson scored three runs for Coeur d’Alene (1-2, 1-2 IEL), which travels to Lewiston for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.

“Every game now without those early season games against the Washington schools, we’re learning about our team,” Erik Karns said. “There’s a lot of positions and at-bats that we’re trying to figure out. We’re giving a lot of guys a chance to play and show what they can do, and we’ve got some guys responding.”

Payton Wysong and Garrett Love singled for Lakeland (0-1, 0-1), which travels to Post Falls for a doubleheader rescheduled for Thursday, starting at 3 p.m.

“We were very rusty and have much to improve on,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “Though we are very young, I really like the potential of my team. They’re a good group of ballplayers and will work hard to improve every day.”

Manzardo’s two-run single with one out in the top of the sixth inning gave Lake City at 6-4 lead, but Lewiston answered with a seven-run bottom of the sixth to regain the advantage. Quinn Conces had two hits and a run scored for Lake City (0-3, 0-3), which travels to Coeur d’Alene next Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

“Both Quinn and Marcus had a couple of really good games and clutch hits,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “I was just happy to get two games in. We were able to get a lot of guys in and improved as the day went on.”

Conces and Manzardo had RBIs for Lake City in the first game.

LEWISTON — The host Bengals, mentioned as a favorite by some coaches in the league, blanked the Timberwolves in an Inland Empire League sweep at Airport Park.

In the first game, Samantha Mader struck out 13 and walked five for Lewiston (4-0, 2-0 IEL).. Phoebe Schultze struck out eight and walked four in four innings for Lake City (1-2, 1-2). An error in the first inning led to two unearned runs by the Bengals.

Hanah Stoddard had two hits, including a triple, in the second game for Lake City. Katie Banks struck out eight and walked one for Lewiston. Taryn Barney had three hits, including a solo homer, and three RBIs for the Bengals.

“Lewiston jumped on us early in the first game, and we were put in some positions that I think will help us in later games,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “I have to give a lot of credit to the Lewiston pitchers for keeping us off balance all day, and I will take responsibility for not having the girls ready to go at the plate. We battled both games, and we moved a lot of people around, and we got to see many different looks with our team. Overall, this was a great learning experience on the road for our young team, and I hope to see lots of growth in the coming days and weeks.”

Krause also became the first player to hit a homer on the new artificial turf at War Memorial Field when she blasted one over the left field wall in the first inning.

"She's a good hitter and she's got quite a bit of experience,” Post Falls coach Holly Gleaves said. “She's faced some pretty good pitchers so ... today she was definitely seeing the ball pretty well."

Kahlea Dumas added three hits for Post Falls (2-1, 2-1 IEL). Sophie Nungesser and McKenna Moak teamed on the shutout for the Trojans. Kaylee Brackett of Sandpoint (0-2, 0-2) singled leading off the fifth inning to break up the no-hitter.

“I think our hitting was pretty good out there and I think both of our pitchers did a nice job on the rubber; they did a really nice job of hitting their spots and Sandpoint's a good team,” Gleaves said. “They've been well-coached for years and this facility is absolutely unbelievable."
