Idaho State Police troopers will be on patrols today, St. Patrick's Day, and this weekend, with a focus on impaired drivers.

"For those who choose to safely gather to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, if their celebration includes alcohol, just plan ahead and arrange for a sober drive home before the party starts," said Idaho State Police Lt. Chris Schenck.

Nationwide, from 2015 to 2019, 280 lives were lost in drunken driving crashes during the St. Patrick's Day period.

During St. Patrick's Day weekend in 2019, more than three out of five crash fatalities involved a drunken driver, ISP reported.

In Kootenai County, from January through March of 2020, there were 45 DUI citations and 53 DUI arrests. This year, through March 15, there have been 47 DUI citations and 39 DUI arrests.
