PREP SOFTBALL: Lake City's Schultze no-hits Sandpoint in season opener

| March 14, 2021 1:15 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Phoebe Schultze pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts, and also drove in four runs as the Lake City Timberwolves beat the visiting Sandpoint Bulldogs 18-0 in the season and Inland Empire League opener for both teams.

Schultze hit a two-run double in the third inning, and hit another two-run double in a 13-run fourth inning for Lake City. Taylor Hill hit a two-run double in the second and a two-run single in the fourth. Austin Hill had a pair of RBI singles, and finished 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Hope Bodak added a two-run double.

“Wow, you don't realize how much you're missing something until it is gone,” said Lake City coach Jesse Lenz, whose team did not get to play a game last spring before the season was shut down due to COVID-19. “ It was exciting to see Phoebe get her time to shine in the circle and a huge debut performance by freshman Taylor Hill at the plate.”

“The game today was part of our learning process, and there were a lot more positives than negatives,” Sandpoint coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said. “We already knew we had a lot of developing to do this season, and today gave us a good look at the areas where we need to improve the most. Most of our players were introduced to varsity-level pitching today, and it was a shell-shock for them.”

Sandpoint plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday at 3 p.m., in the first softball game at Memorial Field.

Lake City travels to Lewiston on Tuesday for a doubleheader.
