Cougar reported on Canfield

| March 11, 2021 1:00 AM

Idaho Fish and Game on Wednesday issued a press release confirming a report of a mountain lion in the Canfield Mountain area.

Wildlife officials urged people in the area to be alert. If you plan to hike on Canfield, consider carrying bear spray or an air horn.

Tips: If you see a cougar don't run, don't scream and don't turn your back on it. Instead, slowly back away while maintaining eye contact.

"If you are attacked, fight back!" a press release said.

IDFG said Thursday a conservation officer had received calls about people thinking there was an animal that could have been poached on Canfield Mountain.

"When he checked out the area he found a mountain lion kill. No one saw a cougar," a note from IDFG said.

According to the Mountain Lion Foundation, Idaho has about 2,000 mountain lions. Cougars avoid people and attacks are rare, MLF reported.
