BASEBALL

Battling rain, 20 mph winds and teams with multiple D1 college commits, the Northwest Premier 18/19u baseball club team went 3-1 in Hurricane, Utah over President’s Day weekend.

Saturday’s first game against the 18u Utah Patriots was won 5-0 with four Northwest Premier pitchers teaming for the shutout. Charles Daniel “CD” Sharples faced six batters in two innings to close out the game with his fifth strikeout.

Northwest Premier got things moving early with Sharples drawing a walk and scoring one run. Colin Roos led things off on the hill for Premier, allowing zero hits and zero runs, striking out two and walking one.

Nick Chase, Ethan Taylor, Dylan Kakuda and Fynn Ridgeway each collected one hit for Premier.

Saturday’s second game went late into the evening with rain delays and high winds. Northwest Premier faced the D1 commit-loaded Utah Vikings and held a three-run lead until the sixth inning in a 10-3 loss. Cam Harris, John Gwaltney, and Tyson Rutherford pitched for Northwest Premier, holding the Utah Vikings scoreless through 5 2/3 innings. Kakuda and Ridgeway singled with Kakuda scoring. Kaden Cripps singled and scored. Sharples walked and scored on a wild pitch.

In Sunday’s first game Northwest Premier won 5-2 over the Wasps 18u. Beckett Ensminger scored on an error in the first inning for Premier. In the second, Premier put up three runs by Roos, Chase, and Taylor as Harris and Ensminger moved runners across the plate with RBIs. In the third, Cripps got on base from a Wasps error, Sharples hit a single, and Taylor also got on base from a Wasps error resulting in a score by Cripps.

Bryce Stockton led things off on the hill for Northwest Premier. The righthander allowed one hit and two runs over 2 1/3 innings, striking out four. Sharples relieved from first base with the bases loaded by pitching 3 2/3 innings with no earned runs and six strikeouts.

In Sunday’s second game Northwest Premier 18/19u won 3-1 over Sandlot as three pitchers combined for a no-hitter — Roos pitched three innings, followed by Ensminger and Chase.

Cripps hit an RBI as Beckett scored in first inning, Ridgeway and Cripps singled in the fourth with Ridgeway and Cripps scoring the other two runs.

Northwest Premier 18u and Northwest Premier 19u will continue play after the Idaho high school season in late May at the Kalispell, Mont., Canadian Days Tournament.

Thorns girls 03/04: The Thorns hosted two Sandpoint Strikers teams in their 2021 friendly match play at The Fields at Real Life in Post Falls. On Feb. 21, the girls met the Strikers G04-05 squad, and played to a 0-0 draw. Hailey Parks had the shutout in goal. On March 6 the Thorns beat the Strikers G02-04 5-0, with goals scored by Taytum Curtis and Olivia Wyatt. Danika Nowak had the shutout in goal.
