PARK: Safety suggestions
With this glorious near-spring weather, my husband and I checked out the new Atlas Mill Riverside Park. From the fenced dog beach, the “other-abled” ramp to the river, swimming holes and launches for kayaks and other non-motorized craft, it is a water park that truly has something for everybody. This stretch of the river is popular with boaters as well, including ourselves.
While there is a log boom, I can’t help but worry about the safety of this mixed-use area in a narrow part of the river. If it isn’t already on the minds of our city and county leaders, it would be great if they looked at early season pre-emptive safety measures.
As with traffic pattern changes on our highways, educating our sheriff’s boat patrols, boaters and adding warning buoys could go a long way in avoiding accidents. Other measures might include reducing the boat speed limit and discouraging towing, waterskiing and wake boarding in this mile-long stretch of the river. I’m not advocating for a no wake zone, but for common sense safety.
Let’s keep each other and our summer safe and sane!
