LIBRARY: Open kids’ section

| March 3, 2021 1:00 AM

After closing its facilities to the public in October, the Coeur d’Alene Public Library will at last open on March 15 — sort of.

Area kids are in school, but the much loved children’s section of our beautiful library will remain closed. According to the library’s website, “reopening the downstairs spaces that include the children’s library and public meeting rooms will follow at a later stage.”

Visits of no more than 30 minutes are being encouraged and the library’s children and teen programs will continue virtually.

I love libraries and I have been particularly fond of our very special library here in Coeur d’Alene, so the leadership’s approach to its services, particularly with regard to our children, has been thoroughly disappointing.

The majority of the Coeur d’Alene community is open and has been for quite a while. Our children can attend school all day, every day, but if they visit the library they will be relegated to a “temporary children’s area” upstairs.

The Coeur d’Alene Public Library should open in earnest on March 15 or funding should be cut.
