Idaho's Coffey takes national award

| March 2, 2021 1:05 AM

Idaho punter Cade Coffey, a senior from Lakeland High, has been named the Stats Perform FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in Idaho’s 28-21 win over No. 12 Eastern Washington on Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.

Coffey punted seven times on the day, averaging 50.6 yards per punt to help flip the field and set the defense up for success. His play of the game came late in the fourth quarter, the game tied at 21. With the Vandals on their own 21-yard line, Coffey sent his longest punt of the day, a 61-yarder, to the EWU 18. The Idaho defense took over from there, holding EWU to just one yard on three plays to get the ball back for what would be the game-winning drive.

In his career, he now has four games of at least six punts with an average over 50 yards.

Coffey was also named the Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week on Sunday.

Earlier Monday, the Vandals moved up the national rankings and are currently No. 19 in the latest STATS Perform FCS Poll.
