Legion baseball: Lums fall to Reno squad at Bozeman tourney

| June 26, 2021 1:05 AM

BOZEMAN, Mont.— The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen were held to three hits and committed five errors in an 11-2 loss to the Reno Knights in pod play at the Treasure State Showdown at Heroes Park on Friday.

Austin Taylor went 2 for 2 and scored a run for Coeur d’Alene (15-5), which fell to 2-1 in pod play.

Reno improved to 3-0 in pod play.

“They’re good, but they’re no different than us,” Lums coach Darren Taylor said. “We played poorly today. We were sloppy. Owen Benson threw well; we didn’t make a lot of plays for him.”

Reno scored unearned runs in the first and second innings and led 2-0 after four innings, then scored nine runs in its final three at-bats.

Reno righthander Mason Daforno struck out six and allowed three hits and two runs, one earned.

“He hit his spots, and he made big pitches when he got ahead in the count,” Taylor said. “He befuddled us.”

Benson pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, two earned.

The loss snapped the Lums’ seven-game win streak.

“We decided afterward just to flush this one,” Taylor said. “You’re going to have a few of these over the course of a long, hot summer.”

Coeur d’Alene plays at Belgrade (Mont.) today at 10:30 a.m. PDT to wrap up pod play, hoping a win would land the Lums in the semifinals on Sunday.
