LEGION BASEBALL: Garza helps Lums rally at tourney

| June 25, 2021 1:00 AM

BOZEMAN, Mont. — Zach Garza stopped the bleeding until he and his teammates could start catching up.

Garza pitched four shutout innings of relief, and delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Jackson, Wyo., 11-5 at Heroes Park on the second day of the Treasure State Showdown.

Garza struck out two and did not allow a hit for Coeur d’Alene (15-4), 2-0 in pod play. The only baserunner he allowed was via an error.

His base hit pulled the Lums within 5-3, and he eventually scored to make it a one-run game.

“Zach Garza came in and pitched phenomenal,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “He gave us enough time to run them down, like we usually do.”

In the sixth, with the bases loaded and the Lums up 7-5, Austin Taylor hit a liner to center that the center fielder dove for and missed, and the ball rolled to the wall, clearing the bases and allowing Taylor to also score on the play.

Cooper Erickson hit a two-run single in the fifth for Coeur d’Alene, which took advantage of nine walks, two hit batsmen and five errors by Jackson.

Coeur d’Alene plays the Reno Knights, also 2-0 in pod play, today at 1 p.m. PDT in Bozeman.
