LEGION BASEBALL: Lums hang on to beat Shockers

| June 18, 2021 1:05 AM

SPOKANE — Coeur d’Alene led by five runs at one point, then had to snuff out the potential tying run at the plate to beat the Shadle Shockers 8-7 in Legion baseball Thursday at Shadle Park High.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Shadle runner on second advanced to third on a pitch in the dirt. The throw got away from the Lums’ third baseman, but shortstop Marcus Manzardo, backing up third, scooped up the ball and threw the runner out trying to score.

“Heads-up play by Marcus,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said.

The next batter flew out to right to end the game.

“We had no business winning,” Taylor said. “We didn’t play very well. You beat a team 19-3 (as the Lums did last Thursday), and you think you’re going to roll over them. They had four or five new guys that didn’t play in that first game.”

Liam Paddack, in his first outing since high school ball with Coeur d’Alene, struck out five and allowed one hit and one run in two innings, throwing 42 pitches.

Zach Garza had two hits, including a two-run single in the first inning, and Austin Taylor hit an RBI single in the fifth.

The Lums (10-4) play the Spokane Cannons 18U today in what was changed to a single game at 6 p.m. at Medical Lake High.
