Bernice 'Bernie' (Singer) Berglund, 98

| June 18, 2021 1:00 AM

Bernice “Bernie” (Singer) Berglund was born Dec. 13, 1922, in Otter Creek, N.D. She was called by Jesus at the age of 98 on June 7, 2021.

We will always remember Mom by her fun loud laugh and red hair! She was always a hard worker, loving Sister, Aunt, Friend, Wife, “Crazy Grandma,” Pet Sitter and best of all a loving caring Mom and Mother-in-Law.

Mom moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1945 from Butte, Mont. Her family settled in Rathdrum on what is known as the Singer Ranch. She lived there with her parents, Bill and Annie Singer. Growing up on the ranch created many opportunities to learn, work, play, enjoy life, animals and spend much time with her seven brothers and five sisters. Brothers Ozzie, Raymond “Ray” (Darlene), Cliff, Walter “Walt” (Grace), Herbert “Herb” (Dolores), Lorenze “Lawrence” (Linda) and Ben (Val). Sisters Willie (Frank) Paul, Rosie (Jack) Fowler, Darlene (Gordy) Smith, Carol Kenna, Nora (Nels) Nelson. Proceeded in death Willie, Rosie, Gordy, Carol, Nora, Ray, Cliff and Linda. Bernie loved her many nieces and nephews.

She loved to travel with family and friends, sports, cook and work in the hospitality industry. Her social life was very important to her, we used to kid around about how much later she could stay out then all of us! The people she met during her career were so important to her and often became close friends; they would often ask to sit at one of her tables so they could visit, enjoy her fun outgoing personality and of course listen to that laugh. A few toddies may have been involved as well. During her career in Coeur d’Alene, she worked at Templin’s, Athletic Round Table (ART) and The Coeur d’Alene Resort. In Spokane, she worked at the Town & Country. Bernie along with some of her brothers and sisters were the second owners of Tony’s Super Club. Paul and Bonnie D’Alessandro, daughter Cheyenne (current owners) and Hadley (crazy, fun bartender) always made Bernie feel so special when she went out there, we will never forget that love, kindness and “girl scout cookies!”

Bernie was preceded in death by her first husband, David Klein. They had two boys, Dowein (Ali) Klein, both preceded in death. Grandkids Wil (Marla) Klein and Jim Klein. Son William “Bill” (Michele, preceded in death) Klein. Grandkids David and (Tracie) Klein, Chris (Jackie) Klein and Joel (April) Stralser. Bernie had many grandkids and great grandkids whom she loved very much.

Bernie was preceded in death by her second husband, Leonard “Swede” Berglund. They enjoyed working in the hospitality industry together at Templin’s. They had one son, Mark (Carri) Berglund of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

She enjoyed a great life together with her final companion Herbert “Herb” Sanderson (preceded in death) of Coeur d’Alene. They enjoyed traveling, fishing, scenic picnic drives, sports, social events and cooking meals for friends and family.

Bernie was able to live independently until the age of 95. The last three years of her life were spent at Bristol Heights Assisted Living. We wish to thank all the family and friends who continued to visit her weekly, both meant the world to her, she always mentioned how blessed she was to have so much company, caring and loving family and friends, we will forever be grateful for all of you! Many thanks to the staff at Bristol Heights and Hospice of North Idaho for the care, support and friendship you provided. Mom was ready, she told the staff on the morning of June 7, Jesus told her he loved her and it was time to go, she never looked back. God Bless You.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. A celebration of life will be immediately following. Details provided at the service.

English Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memories and condolences may be left on Bernie's online memorial at www.englishfuneralchapel.com.
