LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes opens with win

| June 11, 2021 1:00 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Scott Pote homered and drove in five runs, and finished the game on the mound, as the Northern Lakes Mountaineers “A” team opened their Legion baseball season with a 15-10 victory over Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

Pote hit a two-run single to trigger an 11-run third inning for Northern Lakes, then hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh after Bonners had pulled within 12-9.

“He hit it well, and he pitched well,” Mountaineers coach Bryce Johnson said. “He did a real good job coming in and throwing a ton of strikes.”

Payden Wysong and Caleb Knight each drove in a pair of runs for Northern Lakes, which led 11-1 after its big third inning.

“We did a real good job working through the kinks,” Johnson said. “When we needed to buckle down and get some runs, we were able to do that.”

Garza led off the third with a single, and scored on a double by LJ Davey. Garza then capped the seven-run inning with a three-run double.

“He’s starting to assert himself as a big part of our lineup,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said.

Parker Rimpau went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Lums (8-3), and Ryan Schneider, moved into the leadoff spot a few games ago in place of the injured Spencer Zeller, was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

“We’re looking for starters,” Taylor said. “We have too many games, and not enough pitchers.”
