LEGION BASEBALL: Cd'A teams win openers at Washington State tournament

| July 27, 2021 1:00 AM

SPOKANE - A four-run fourth inning provided just enough runs for the Coeur d'Alene A Lumbermen Navy team, which held off Sedro Woolley 4-3 in Monday's opening game of the Washington State AA American Legion tournament.

Later on Monday, the Cd'A A Lumbermen Red team also won its opener, topping the Kennewick Phantoms 10-7 at Gonzaga Prep High School.

The two Coeur d'Alene teams meet today at 3 p.m. back in Spokane.

For the Navy team, Cooper Smith, Ty Shepard, Jake Danneberg and Aidan Blanco all singled and scored in the fourth inning, with AJ Currie's RBI double bringing home the final run.

Jayden Butler and Karl Schwarzer combined to allow zero earned runs and only three hits in seven innings of work for CDA Navy.

Cd'A Red had nine hits and took advantage of six Kennewick errors to outscore the Phantoms right from the start of Monday's game.

Calvin Coppess and Jesse Brown led off the game with hits, scored two of Cd'A's three first-inning runs, and the Red team never trailed again.

Nathan Brillhart had three hits and four RBIs to lead Coeur d'Alene, while Cam Davey went 2-for-2 with a double and run scored.
