HO: Reference isn’t racist

| July 23, 2021 1:00 AM

Regarding the editorial “The other choice is the right one,” the writer seems to assume that the offensive message which was highlighted has to do with the vice president’s race. While I do agree that vulgarity is inappropriate, couldn’t that disrespectful message be in reference to the fact that Kamala Harris had an extramarital affair with Willie Brown, then California Assembly Speaker, apparently in return for political appointments which helped launch her political career? Couldn’t it be in reference to the claims that Kamala Harris’ political ambitions are manifested by selling herself out to special interest groups?

I do not hold the belief that racism is an exclusive characteristic of Americans of European descent. I am an American of Mexican descent who was raised in a minority community comprised of at least 90% Americans of African descent. I experienced racism from Americans of African descent, and witnessed racism coming from Latinos.

After two years of living in the Coeur d’Alene area, I have not found the citizenry to be racist. Overall, Kootenai County is a decent community. The Press should not be in the business of trying to shame this community into believing that it is racist.
