Former Lakeland High volleyball standout Ryan named U20 National Training Team alternate

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Katy Ryan, an incoming freshman at Washington State and former Lakeland High star, was named to the USA Volleyball Women's indoor U20 National Training Team as an alternate, USA Volleyball announced.

Ryan, a 6-foot-5 inch opposite from Rathdrum, helped lead Lakeland to its first state volleyball title last fall. She lettered in both volleyball and basketball for four years. She was the Idaho Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year in 2020.

Ryan maintained a 4.196 grade point average at Lakeland, where she was a member of the Calculus Club, National Honors Society, Student-Athlete Leadership Team, and earned herself an Idaho Top Scholar Award. Ryan will look to pursue a degree in elementary education at WSU.

The U.S. Women’s U20 Team is currently playing in the FIVB U20 World Championship in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Bomar heads locals after first day of Rosauers

SPOKANE — Prairie Falls co-owner Billy Bomar is the top local after the first round of the 34th Rosauers Open Invitational on Friday at Indian Canyon.

Bomar shot a 2-under-par 69.

Loren Jeglum of Palouse Ridge in Pullman and 2010 champion Kyle Kelly of Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., fired rounds of 7-under par, 64 for a one-shot lead.

Taylor Porter of Avondale and amateur Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake each shot 1-under 70s.

The 54-hole tournament continues today and concludes Sunday.
