RATHDRUM — Residents of Rathdrum might recognize Michael and Sharron McPhail from their volunteer service.

But that doesn't mean the McPhails recognize their community impact. They were completely surprised to be chosen as Rathdrum Days Parade grand marshals.

“It’s an honor to be chosen to represent our community," Sharron said.

Attending a recent Rathdrum Chamber of Commerce meeting, the McPhails were prepared to nominate someone for the honor of grand marshal, when Ashley Moore, executive director, announced that Michael and Sharron had already been chosen.

"The banners were already printed. Our faces were on them and we were utterly shocked," Sharron said.

Married for 53 years, the McPhails have demonstrated a passion for serving the community. The couple plays Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus each year for the Trading Post and Rathdrum Community Center Christmas events.

“We do it for the little kids to make them smile,” Sharron said.

The couple has two children and five grandchildren.

The McPhails' service doesn't stop at Santa's workshop. Over the years, Michael has volunteered as a firefighter, EMT, for the sheriff's office, as a chaplain and at food banks. He's also a member of the American Legion Post 154.

Both belong to Calvary Rathdrum Church, where Sharron volunteers, teaching and mentoring women.

Pastor Cory Kirkham will escort the grand marshals in the parade from inside a shiny red Cadillac convertible — kind of like Santa's sleigh.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the north end of Main Street.
