LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes concludes regular season with split

RATHDRUM — Trevor Vandever and Payden Wysong drove in two runs each for Northern Lakes, which beat the Camas Prairie Zephyrs 6-1 in the first game of a North Idaho League doubleheader on Wednesday at Gorton Field.

Camas Prairie (18-8, 8-4 NIL) won the nightcap 6-2, giving Northern Lakes (18-15, 8-4) the third seed to the class A Area A tournament starting Friday at Lakeland High. Camas Prairie will be the second seed.

Jacob Schaffner scored two runs for Northern Lakes, which used a four-run sixth inning to pull away.

“We knew coming into that game that we needed to win that first game,” said Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson, whose teams faces Camas Prairie again in district play on Friday at 2 p.m. in Rathdrum. “We knew we were going to see them again regardless, and I was proud of the kids for coming out and knowing what we had to do.”

Wysong allowed six hits in 6 ⅔ innings, striking out two for Northern Lakes.

“Payden pitched extremely well and kept them off balance,” Johnson said. “We were fairly consistent with the bats and cashed in with some big hits when we needed them.”

Tristan Clift had two hits in the second game for Northern Lakes.

In Friday’s opening day at districts, fifth seed Lewis-Clark will face fourth seed Sandpoint at 11 a.m., followed by Northern Lakes-Camas Prairie at 2 p.m.

Moscow, which clinched the top seed with a win Tuesday at Northern Lakes, faces the winner of the 11 a.m. game to conclude play on Friday at 5 p.m.
