| July 14, 2021 1:10 AM

RATHDRUM — Visiting Moscow scored three runs without notching a hit in the first inning and went on to beat the Northern Lakes Mountaineers 6-1 in a class A North Idaho League game at Gorton Field on Tuesday.

“We got out to a sluggish start with a couple of walks and didn’t play very clean in the first inning,” said Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson, whose team allowed three walks and an error in the first inning. “We got out to a sluggish start defensively and didn’t make good adjustments at the plate.”

Caleb Knight doubled leading off the fifth inning and scored on a double by Payden Wysong for Northern Lakes (17-14, 7-3 NIL), which hosts Camas Prairie today in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. to conclude the regular season.

Moscow will be the top seed to the class A Area A tournament at Lakeland High starting on Friday. With a win today, Northern Lakes will clinch the second seed.

Hayden Thompson, who pitched at Walla Walla Community College, struck out 10 in 4 1/3 innings for Moscow.

“He can throw,” said Johnson of Thompson. “He’s a solid pitcher. We didn’t capitalize on our chances and he did a good job of keeping us off balance.”
