LEGION BASEBALL: Lums walk into semis of Whitefish tourney

| July 11, 2021 1:10 AM

WHITEFISH, Mont. — Ryan Schneider struck out eight for Coeur d’Alene, which took advantage of 12 walks to beat the Spokane Expos Red 18U 11-2 in the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament, finishing pool play 3-0.

“Ryan really threw a gem today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “That’s a good hitting team with some really good players. Ryan is starting to get his control and legs back under him. We’ve been working him back slowly, and I think we’ll be able to get some complete games out of him at districts. Things are going according to script and looking good.”

Patrick Rimpau walked three times and drove in two runs for Coeur d’Alene (21-8), which plays in a semifinal game today at 1 p.m. PDT.

The championship game is scheduled for tonight at 6.

MISSOULA, Mont. — Payden Wysong struck out seven and allowed two hits on the mound, then doubled twice at the plate for the Mountaineers in a win over the Bees in the Missoula Mavericks Invitational, finishing pool play 2-2.

“Payden did an extremely good job of throwing strikes and mixing it up,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “He’s got a lot of pitches and did a good job of locating his pitches and throwing them for strikes, which gave him some confidence. I was extremely happy with how he competed on the mound today.”

Sam Pemberton had a two-run single in the first inning for Northern Lakes (16-13), which faces the Missoula Mavericks in the third-place game today at 1 p.m. PDT.

“Sam really got us going in that first inning,” Johnson said. “Being able to cash in and score some runs in the first inning was big for us. We had a lot of clutch hitting, and I was happy with that.”
