LEGION BASEBALL: Lums triumph again at Whitefish tourney

WHITEFISH, Mont. — Owen Benson pitched four strong innings and Cooper Erickson delivered a key base hit as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” beat the Missoula Eagles 10-2 in pool play Friday at the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament at Memorial Field.

Benson struck out three and allowed three hits in four innings for Coeur d’Alene (20-8), which improved to 2-0 in pool play, and the one run he allowed was unearned.

“Owen Benson threw a gem,” Lums coach Darren Taylor said.

Cooper Erickson came on in the third inning and “made a couple nice plays at third plays,” Taylor said, then delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to highlight a five-run third.

Right-hander Lucas Erickson saw his first action since suffering a broken left wrist in a collision at first base during a tournament at Missoula over Memorial Day weekend, pitching the fifth inning.

Coeur d’Alene wraps up preliminary play today in the seven-team tourney vs. the Spokane Expos at 11:30 a.m. PDT, and with a victory will secure a spot in Sunday’s semifinal round.

MISSOULA, Mont. — The Mountaineers dropped to 1-2 at the Missoula Mavericks tournament with the loss to the Red Sox.

Jacob Hessing went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs with a single in the fifth inning for Northern Lakes (15-13) , and is now 6 for 9 for the tournament.

Northern Lakes wraps up pool play today vs. the Idaho Falls Bees at 3:30 p.m. PDT.
