WHITEFISH, Mont. — Cooper Larson drove in three runs as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” beat the Glacier Twins “A” 9-3 on the first day of play at the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament late Thursday night at Memorial Field.

Ryan Schneider and Parker Rimpau each drove in two runs for the Lums (19-8), who led 6-0 after the top of the second inning.

“Cooper Larson hit the ball well all night,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “We had some timely hits early to set the tone.”

Liam Paddack struck out six in three innings and Troy Shepard fanned six in 2.2 for Coeur d’Alene.

“We had some good pitching from Liam and Troy,” Taylor said. “We kept them both under 60 pitches so they can both come back and start on Sunday, when we go to bracket play.”

Paddack threw 56 pitches. Shepard’s 60th pitch was fouled back, so Taylor took him out to keep him eligible for Sunday (after two days’ rest) and brought in Jackson Scherr, who threw one strike to end the game.

The Lums are scheduled to play the Missoula Eagles today at 4:30 p.m. PDT as pool play continues. The Spokane Crew didn’t show, so the tourney is down to seven teams. Coeur d’Alene will play the Spokane Expos on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., then overall records for the seven teams will determine seeding for Sunday’s bracket play.
