| July 9, 2021 1:00 AM

Editor's note: The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office will occasionally post jail logs so everyone can better understand what happens behind the walls of the jail.

During a 12-hour shift starting Friday night, the jail had 385 people in custody. Seventy-one percent for felony charges, 29% for misdemeanors. Thirty-six people were arrested on this day.

Here's some of what went on:

At 8:18 p.m., deputy assistance call was made by the Control Room. An inmate was being placed on suicide watch per medical and was refusing staff’s instructions to be handcuffed. Deputies entered the cell and placed the suicidal inmate in handcuffs. He was escorted to Safety Cell 1 where he complied with being placed on a suicide watch.

At 11:30 p.m., an inmate asked to be removed from his housing location due to not feeling comfortable around inmates of another race. A deputy rehoused the inmate in Unit 2 hold.

At 12:25 a.m., an inmate was refusing to follow deputies' instructions inside Hold 1. Due to the inmate causing a disturbance in Hold 1 with other inmates, he was ordered to place his hands through the food port. The inmate complied, was handcuffed through the food port, and escorted to Hold 2. The inmate was housed in a single cell due to his behavior.

At 1:15 a.m. Coeur d'Alene police arrived with a new arrestee for resisting and disorderly announced uncooperative. Deputies met CDAPD in the auto sally. The arrestee was escorted to Safety Cell 2. The arrestee was verbally non-compliant and defensively resistive and would not comply with an intake search. Due to his growing agitated state and failure to follow instructions, he was searched in the prone position. The deputy completed a pat search. All staff exited the cell. Update: 0445 hours, the arrestee was moved to Med Hold 2.

0329 hours, an inmate began hitting the window of Hold 2 with enough force to cause injury to himself and jail property. The inmate was in an agitated state and would not follow verbal commands of staff. The inmate was ordered to place his hands through the food port in order to be handcuffed. The inmate reluctantly complied and was handcuffed through the food port. The inmate was escorted to Safety Cell 1, the handcuffs were removed, and all staff exited the cell. Update: The inmate continued to hit on the Safety Cell door throughout the remainder of the shift.
