Zags will play in first college basketball game in refurbished Seattle arena

Gonzaga and Alabama are scheduled to play in the 2021 Battle in Seattle on Dec. 4, the Zags officially announced.

The first meeting between the programs will be the first college basketball game played in the new Climate Pledge Arena, formerly KeyArena.

Game time and television information will be announced in the near future. Tickets go on sale to the public on July 16 at 10 a.m. at climatepledgearena.com. Presale of tickets to ZAG members will begin on Friday.

This is the 14th edition of the Battle in Seattle, but the first since 2015. Gonzaga beat Tennessee 86-79 in 2015 event. The Bulldogs have won the last five Battle in Seattle games, and hold a 9-4 record in the event all-time. The 2015 the event drew its highest attendance at 16,770 fans.

Hatley slips to 16th

at Washington Men's Amateur

BREMERTON, Wash. — Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake is tied for 16th with a 2-over 146 after the second day of the 100th Washington Men’s Amateur on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Hatley, who won the 2019 event, shot a 3-over 75 and is 13 shots behind leader RJ Manke of Lakewood, Wash., who leads with an 11-under 133.

The tournament concludes today.

Holmgren powers Team USA

in round of 16 romp

RIGA, Latvia — Incoming Gonzaga freshman Chet Holmgren recorded a double-double off the bench with 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and three blocks as Team USA rolled past South Korea 132-60 in a round of 16 matchup in the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup.

The USA (4-0) finished with U19 men’s single-game records in points (132), rebounds (62), assists (39), field goals made (57) and field goals attempted (92).

South Korea finished 0-4.

“It felt like a lot of fun, we had a lot of guys play a great game and put up some great numbers and we had fun doing it,” Holmgren said. “We’re loving getting each other going and sharing the ball. We’re building confidence, building chemistry, finding our rhythm and I think things are going pretty well.”

The USA rebounded South Korea 62-25 and forced South Korea into 23 turnovers, leading to 40 points.

The Americans will be Senegal in the quarterfinals on Friday at 8 a.m., with the semifinals on Saturday and finals on Sunday.

In the other games, France (3-1) downed Mali (0-4) 86-52, Serbia (4-0) edged Japan (0-4) 89-86, Spain (3-1) took down Australia (1-3) 86-73, Lithuania (3-1) pounded Iran (1-3) 96-53, Argentina (3-1) nipped Turkey (2-2) 76-74, Senegal defeated host Latvia (2-2) 57-44 and Canada (4-0) took care of Puerto Rico (1-3) 86-56.
